Can Stainless Steel Furniture Be Used Outdoors?

Yes, it can. But the decision is made on salt, not on rain. Moving stainless steel from indoors to outdoors, the real question is not will it get wet but will it meet salt-laden air. On a city balcony away from the coast, 304 stainless steel will stand for many years without trouble. On a coastal strip, beside a pool, or on a street frontage salted in winter, 316 belongs in the conversation.
Water itself is not the problem
The protection in stainless steel is the film chromium forms with oxygen, and water does not break that film. In the presence of oxygen it continuously renews itself. The humidity that rots wood and swells chipboard and veneered surfaces is not a threat to stainless steel. Rain, snow and ordinary damp sit comfortably inside the working range of 304.
Chloride creates the risk. Salt ions settle on the weak points of the protective film, puncture a very small area, then drive downward. This damage is called pitting corrosion. Published data shows 304 holding up to roughly 400 mg/L of chloride in water at ambient temperature, with the threshold dropping to about 150 mg/L at 60 °C.
A decision table by location
| Location | Suitable grade | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosed balcony, veranda, winter garden | 304 | No different from indoors |
| Open city balcony, courtyard | 304 | Regular rinsing is enough |
| Terrace within 1 km of the sea | 316 | Salt spray travels |
| Pool surround | 316 | Constant chlorine vapour |
| Street frontage salted in winter | 316 | Road salt splashes |
The real limit is the upholstery
Here is the point most people miss: the outdoor conversation usually starts with metal and ends with fabric. Even when a chair has a stainless steel body, if the seat is linen, nubuck or woven fabric, that textile was not made for outdoor use. Indoor fabric exposed to constant damp and direct sun will mildew, fade and lose its texture.
Cohoo pieces are designed for interiors. Mobo Stool and Mobo Bar Stool use linen-textured upholstery, Move Chair nubuck or woven fabric. Using them on a sheltered balcony is possible, leaving them in a garden open to rain and sun is not.
All-metal pieces are free of that constraint. Mobo Coffee Table is made entirely of stainless steel from body to top, and Trio Nesting Table is all metal as well. Pieces like these are far more comfortable in sheltered outdoor settings.
Three habits if you do use it outdoors
Rinse it. Salt and dust building up on the surface make the protective film work harder. Once a month is enough, once a fortnight in coastal areas.
Keep steel wool away. The iron particles it leaves behind rust, and the mark gets mistaken for the steel corroding. A soft cloth is all that is needed.
Cover it or bring it in for winter. This advice is not for the metal but for upholstery and any electrical components. Our stainless steel furniture care guide has the detailed method.
Frequently asked questions
Will 304 stainless steel rust in a garden?
In a garden away from the sea and with no salt source, it will not rust under normal conditions. Orange marks on the surface are usually iron particles from elsewhere, and they can be cleaned off.
Does stainless steel get very hot in the sun?
Metal surfaces heat up in direct sun, more noticeably on polished finishes. Shade or an upholstered seating surface removes the issue.
Is it damaged by frost?
No. Stainless steel is unaffected by freezing temperatures. It does not crack or become brittle.
